MEXICO

Hello Nadja and Rachael!

I did try and send a post as promised while I was in Mexico but access was refused, so here is one from England where I have already unpacked my suitcase and am planning my next trip!

In Mexico I was staying with an old friend whom I had not seen for at least 35 years! She is a sculptor and has lived in Spain, Porto Rico and Mexico since 1980. At present she is renting an idealic home next to a piece of land that she is building on. My month there was spent between Mexico City (an hour and a half away from the nearest village) The village (20minutes away from the house by car or bus), and her home which looked over a green valley to the mountains beyond. It was the beginning of the rainy season, and although often the days were sunny there were spectacular thunder storms during the evenings, or nights. (rarely, but sometime during the day).

So you can see why I was happy to spend a lot of my time just gazing at the view, and the changing weather conditions, and light.

The obvious places to visit in Mexico city were Frida Kahlo's home, and Diego Rivera's studio. (You can see the bridge that links Frida's studio to his but her studio was not open to the public). I also visited Rivera's collection of archaeological objects house in an amazing purpose built (designed by him) building. see below. (also the Museo Dolores Olmedo Patino, Museum of Modern Art and Museo Rufino Tamayo. Enough!)

In Mexico there are shrines everywhere and also street sellers.

Mexico is a country of colours, and when you see the flowers you can understand why.

Also the fruits!

I have made up a powerpoint that I am showing to friends. I think you just need to go to Mexico one day. It is a very exciting place; full of contrasts with many layers. Worth waiting 20 years for, which I did! and one month without internet connection and a mobile phone is worth trying too!

Oh, Yes! I did visit an archaeological site with aztec pyramids, certainly not to be forgotten! (plenty of pictures on the internet already)!

Have a great holiday, and look forward to seeing you next term.

xx Jennie

PS. I took my travelling exhibition there! Next stop France!
