Introducing the people behind this blog

RACHAEL MURRAY BA hons Fine Art, Year 2
My passion for art is evident in my motivation and commitment to work and my constant enthusiasm to create, experiment, develop and learn. My practice mainly focuses on painting, printmaking and photography, yet I am also interested in using other media and techniques to convey a particular message or to investigate a subject further. My work often explores the surrounding environment, including the urban and natural landscape, and also visually documents personal experiences and concerns in wider society. For this research project I would like to display some paintings of Canterbury and Manchester in an exhibition space, exploring the theme of location and dislocation by street scenes of two contrasting cities. I would also like to make small site specific work in or around Canterbury, using found objects or unobtrusive materials which I would document then leave in the particular location that they relate to, allowing for a natural engagement with the general public.

My main interest lies within storytelling. The theme investigated has always meant a greater deal to me than the materials used. Materials are a necessity in order to best describe to the viewer what I want to investigate or question. I have been working professionally within the fields of drawing as an illustrator, but it is painting which fascinates me most for the moment. I am also interested in the media of film and projection as a way of giving paintings new meaning-Turning a painting into life.

JENNIE WRIGHT BA hons Fine ArtYear 2

As an artist and student I work in a variety of different media with a strong focus on painting, printing and film. I am interested in presenting my work in installations that are site specific and therefor am engaged with the subject/object in space. My subject matter is contemporaneous and responds to certain situations or concerns of the moment. It is at times controversial and I like to look at the psychology of taboo. I am there for also interested in displacement. At present I am exploring the Church, and what it stands for and am working on paintings. I like my work to provoke thought and pose questions. There is not a literal answer or a single correct response to my work.

My main criteria are to extend my experience both in the creating of my work and in the installing and placing it in the public domain.
